Twenty-Two

No, I am not turning twenty-two.

Twenty-two percent was the score that I got on my advanced molecular biology final this weekend.

Allow me to elaborate.

So for some reason, BYU thought that it would be cool to start finals on Saturday this year (I guess because no one can really say anything different...) so I decided that I would take my MMBIO 441 final first because I thought it would be the easiest. It wasn't cumulative, and I've been doing pretty well in the class so far. I studied up on the reading days and then went to take it bright and early (okay only 10 am) Saturday morning. I felt like it went well, there were only a couple things I wasn't 100% sure on, so I left the music room feeling pretty good. I hopped downstairs to check my multiple choice score on the screen, and saw the last 4 digits of my student ID with a big 22% next to it. That's right. As in, I got less than a quarter of the questions right. I was in immediate shock. I sprinted back up the stairs and asked the testing center worker if I could see my scantron to check to see if I had skipped a line or something so my answers were all off, but nope. Everything on my scantron matched what I had circled on my exam, and the testing center lady was like, "Well, sorry about that." I walked out the building in a daze. As soon as I got home, I emailed my professor asking if maybe (hopefully!) there was a problem with the key, and then checked my email every five seconds after that.

I couldn't handle it anymore, so after studying a little bit, Owen and I went for a bike ride. Some previous resident of this house left two bikes in the backyard, and since they have been sitting there all winter long, we decided that no one is coming back for them, so Owen fixed them up and we went for a ride. The Provo River trail was so nice, that we decided to bike all the way out to Utah Lake, even though we had originally planned on just testing them out in the neighborhood. We got to the lake entrance an hour-ish later, found out that you have to pay a fee to go to the lake (lame-o!) and turned around. About five minutes after turning around, Owen's back tire was completely flat. We asked everyone on the trail if they had a pump, and miraculously one guy did (it's Provo, everyone is prepared). But the pump didn't do much, it was clear there was a large puncture in the tire. Of course neither of us had brought our phones or wallets or anything useful (not even a water bottle), and we had no idea where we were. We decided that the best plan would be for Owen to figure out a way back on my bike to our house, and then drive to pick me up. So I wished him farewell and sat down by the river with our broken bike. People probably thought I was creepy just sitting there, but I kept a sharpened stick by me at all times, just in case. Owen came back at lightning speed--thank heavens for that man's incredible sense of direction, and fortunately I wasn't attacked or anything and it didn't rain.

Since we were already near the store, we decided to drop by Wal-mart to get a new bike tire so we could ride again soon (hopefully in a little better shape and with cell phones next time!). We felt like we deserved a treat after all of that, so we went out to dinner at Mountain West Burrito. Best. Decision. Ever. Seriously. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. We got a chicken burrito and roasted vegetable chimichanga. Normally I don't really go for vegetarian options, but I am so glad I did! It was heavenly! And all of the food was organic, and since I am from Washington, I like that sort of stuff I guess. If you haven't tried this place, you must. Now. Next time I promise to take pictures. But then again, we weren't exactly planning on getting stranded during our bike ride.

Leaving this delicious restaurant very satisfied, we looked at the clock on our way home. It was 6:45, which was an hour after Owen's final was scheduled to begin. We realized he was an hour late and immediately started freaking out. Fortunately, it was only for his video game class, so it ended up being okay, but it definitely was an interesting end to a day that had already been full of surprises.

The good news is that my teacher emailed us yesterday and said that there was a problem with the key and that he will be re-grading all of the tests by hand. I knew I was a little bit smarter than 22%.

  1. ooohmugosh I love you Chels! I was thoroughly entertained with every line that I read, not that I expected any less from you. I mean, you were smart enough to be my roommate ;) and although I was selfless enough to give you up to Owen, it sounds like you two are doing spectacularly, so I cannot complain. I think I am going to give you a jingle...now. Muah. SF? Whaaat??
